SANTA FE-Nancy Laflin, Executive Director of the New Mexico Music Commission, today announced that New Mexican Val Kilmer, famous for his roles as The Doors' Jim Morrison and Batman, will perform in Austin, Texas in an effort to support New Mexico musicians at one of the biggest music festivals in the country.

With the help of several state and city agencies, 13 New Mexico bands will perform at two New Mexico showcases at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Kilmer, a New Mexican who lives near Ribera, will sing at the second showcase.

The New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) is partnering with the New Mexico Music Commission, the City of Albuquerque, the New Mexico Film Office, the City of Santa Fe Film Office, and four New Mexico-based record companies to put on the events.

"This is an opportunity to showcase New Mexico's music and film talent and resources at a festival that features some of the biggest names in either industry," said Governor Bill Richardson.

"Because of intense marketing the last three years, Austin has become our number one tourism market. Val Kilmer and our New Mexico artists being here is our thank you to Austin," said Jon Hendry, Marketing Director of The New Mexico Tourism Department.
