Teleperformance New Title Sponsor
of Silver City's Tour of the Gila Bike Race
Mike Stauffer, Communications Director, New Mexico Tourism Department
Teleperformance USA, recognized as one of the fastest growing contact center outsourcers in the United States, is the new title sponsor for this year's 20th annual Tour of the Gila bike race in Silver City, New Mexico, May 3-7, 2006. Teleperformance will soon open its newest call center in Silver City - a facility that will employ more than 600 residents.
"We are extremely pleased to have Teleperformance as our title sponsor," said race director Jack Brennan. "It is important to us to have a sponsor as passionate about local community support and partnership as we are about the cycling lifestyle."
Ranked as one of the most grueling stage races in North America, the Tour of the Gila annually attracts 450 to 550 participants to Silver City.
"New Mexico has a national reputation as a great place for fitness - with our many recreation areas and opportunities for cycling, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, running and swimming," said Michael Cerletti, secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD). "It's the perfect venue for national and international sporting events as well, from bike to auto racing, from boxing to skiing. The continued success and expansion of the Tour of the Gila is an important step in the process of proving the economic viability of New Mexico in the sporting world."
Brennan said the Silver City community "is most appreciative of the ongoing efforts of (NMTD) and its staff in its promotion of the Tour of the Gila. The race has a huge economic impact on this community and we are grateful for the Department's hard work in helping insure the event's continued success."
The Tour of the Gila began in 1987 and has become part of USACycling's National Racing Calendar. It is recognized internationally, with participants from Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Russia, Mexico, Colombia, and Australia. Co-sponsors of this year's event include Holiday Inn Express of Silver City, Gila Hike and Bike, Gila Regional Medical Center, Tim Schoeny, Zia Publishing, International Association of Firefighters Local 2430, Prudential Silver Properties, New Belgium Brewing, Western New Mexico Telephone Company, Isaac's Bar, Sparks Clinic, Porter Food Marts-Chevron, Comfort Inn, Phelps Dodge Mining Company, Southwestern Bone and Joint Institute, 1st New Mexico Bank of Silver City and Wells Fargo.
"This year, Teleperformance is extremely proud to have an opportunity to be a part of one of the premier cycling events in the world, the Tour of the Gila," said Roy J. Prasad, vice president of Corporate Human Resources for Teleperformance. "We believe our partnership with the local communities is a contributing factor to the success of our centers."
Teleperformance USA employs more than 17,000 people with 21 centers strategically scattered around the United States, plus facilities in Canada, India, Argentina and the Philippines. It actively supports organ and tissue donation, the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Organization and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of America; and last year, donated almost $150,000 to aid in the disaster relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Wilma and the earthquake that devastated Pakistan. In addition to these worthwhile programs, the company sponsors volunteer efforts, local food banks and other local charities.
"We would like to thank the Town of Silver City once again for allowing us to be an integral part of the Tour of the Gila," Prasad said. "But more than that, for welcoming Teleperformance with such warmth and hospitality."
Stage One (May 3) of the Teleperformance's Tour of the Gila follows a 15.7-mile course along State Road 90 near Tyrone, beginning around noon. Stage Two (May 4) begins at Gough Park in Silver City, travels 92 miles to Mogollon and includes nearly 6,000 feet of climbing. Stage Three (May 5) follows a 73-mile loop, beginning and ending at Fort Bayard. Stage Four (May 6) is the one-mile Silver City Criterium through downtown.
