Evening Slide Lecture and Talk with Andrew Connors, NHCC Senior Curator, on Colección FEMSA, una Mirada continental (The FEMSA Collection, a Continental Vision) 

The FEMSA exhibition features modern and contemporary works of art by 56 Latin American artists, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Wilfredo Lam, Roberto Matta and more.  Come select your favorite works of art to sponsor at this special evening. You may also preview and select your favorite work of art on-line at www.hcfoundation.org.

MARCH 3 - 12

Enjoy an exciting week of diverse programming building on the idea of "Women and Creativity". This weeklong celebration is a collaborative endeavor with local organizations and involves a series of activities throughout the city. Highlights at the NHCC include a March 4 Latin Diva Concert with Peruvian-born singer Tania Libertad. This honey-voiced songstress is at the top of the world music scene with over 36 albums and millions of records sold. Also enjoy "From The Chronicles of Odísia Sánchez" a one-woman show that chronicles a contemporary Odyssey, a travelogue of the heart that takes you along a journey to pre-dot.com, post Rodney King San Francisco into the southern reaches of Mexico.

MARCH 8

HBO Films presents WALKOUT, a true story of the Chicano student uprising in East Los Angeles in 1968, where several dramatic walkouts were staged at local high schools to protest the academic prejudices and the dire school conditions. Director EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (Oscar® nominee for Stand and Deliver) and Executive Producer MOCTESUMA ESPARZA (Selena) will be special guests at this event.

MARCH 12

Grammy Award-Winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra with an opening performance by Son Como Son. Formed in 2000 as a project by veteran pianist, composer and arranger Oscar Hernandez and Aaron Levinson, "La Orquesta del Barrio" - a reference to the historically Puerto Rican neighborhood of east Harlem in Manhattan - has gone on to establish itself as the ambassador of New York Latin dance music to the United States and beyond.

Talk, Slide Show and Tapas with travel writer Anya von Bremzen and her new book The New Spanish Table (Workman, $22.95). Today at 6 PM at La Fonda del Bosque Restaurant at the National Hispanic Cultural Center: Fundraiser for the NHCC Foundation: Tickets $50 per person or $75 per couple, including the signed book, tapas with coffee and tea, talk and mixer with Anya von Bremzen. Tickets can be purchased at La Tiendita gift shop at the NHCC, or at Bookworks, via phone at 344-8139.

 

NHCC SPRING 2006 DOCENT CLASS

Would you like the opportunity to meet and learn from locally and nationally renowned artists? Do you wish young people knew more about Hispanic culture and heritage? Then join us for the annual daytime or evening Docent Class for visitor guides. This free course on Wednesdays March 1 - April 5 will introduce you to the National Hispanic Cultural Center and train you to be a successful visitor guide. Spanish fluency or previous experience is helpful but not necessary. Call Doug Simon at 246-2261 ext.142 to reserve your place.
