MAGIC SPELLERS

Since its formation in 1987, the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy has been working to tackle the State's illiteracy problem, implementing more than twenty new literacy projects. To help support these community-based literacy programs and conduct its wide-ranging development activities, the NMCL relies upon private donations and government funding.

To bring attention to the topic of illiteracy and the work of NMCL, First Lady Barbara Richardson and Lionsgate films present a special screening of 'Akeelah And The Bee.' "We're proud to be associated with the First Lady and her important literary initiative," said Lionsgate's President of Production, Michael Paseornek. "It's especially gratifying when we can produce a movie that combines entertainment with social awareness." The inspirational story of a young girl from south Los Angeles who earns a chance to go to the national Spelling Bee, 'Akeelah And The Bee' is released April 28.

5"We are very grateful to the First Lady and Lionsgate for an opportunity to raise awareness about literacy issues in New Mexico in such a positive, hopeful way," declared NMCL's Executive Director Rena Paradis. "Our organization is about to celebrate its 20th year in New Mexico, and we strive to give hope to the thousands of families who struggle because of problems reading. This is a wonderful, uplifting event!"

First Lady Barbara Richardson, who has long been an advocate for literacy and recently established New Mexico's Read To Feed program, welcomed the chance to get involved in this collaboration. "The New Mexico Coalition for Literacy has been instrumental in combating illiteracy across the state. I am truly grateful that Lionsgate entertainment wishes to join us in the fight to improve literacy rates throughout New Mexico." New Mexico Coalition for Literacy needs money to enhance the number of tutors who can be trained and students who can be served.
